PORTLAND, ME — Hannah Pingree, former Speaker of the House and Democratic candidate for governor, rolled out a comprehensive health care plan aimed at making care more affordable, accessible, and accountable for Maine families. Speaking at a press conference with frontline health care professionals, Hannah outlined how her plan would tackle skyrocketing costs, improve access to care, and ensure Maine communities remain healthy.
“The Trump administration and Republicans in Congress have deliberately weakened our health system, leaving Maine families to pay the price,” said Hannah. “As governor, I will fight back — protecting public health, lowering costs, and making care accessible for everyone.
“As a family physician, I have seen what a broken health care system looks like on the front lines,” Dr. Linda Sanborn of Gorham. “Hannah Pingree understands those realities and has the courage and leadership to stand up for patients and families when it matters most.”
Hannah’s plan to improve health care in Maine that focuses on three core priorities:
Coverage We Can Afford: Create a public health insurance option that answers to Maine people instead of corporations, increase accountability for health care players, and reduce wasteful complexity across the system and crack down on corporate and private equity buyouts of health facilities that lead to the loss of critical services, gaps in underserved areas, and higher prices.
Care Where and When We Need It: Incentivize and expand primary, maternity, and reproductive health care, foster new models that make the most of our health care professionals, and continue improving access to mental health and substance use care, especially in rural Maine. Grow the health care workforce by training, recruiting, and keeping more providers in Maine, expanding rural training programs, and using technology to help connect patients to care faster.
Communities That Keep Us Healthy: Strengthen public health and focus on basic needs that form the foundation of healthy lives, like affordable housing, food security, services that support families and aging in place, and a clean environment.

Hannah developed this plan after listening to patients, families, and frontline health care workers across Maine. As a mother, rural resident, and former state leader, she knows firsthand the challenges families face in accessing care. During her time as Speaker of the House and chair of the Health and Human Services Committee, Hannah expanded access to care, lowered prescription drug costs, protected children from toxic chemicals, and strengthened rural health services. Most recently, she led the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future, helping communities tackle pressing challenges and investing in Maine’s health care workforce and local economies.
