Statement from Hannah Pingree on Canadian Tariffs:
“Mainers’ livelihoods and our state’s economy depends on a real, working relationship with Canada. Trump has repeatedly picked unnecessary fights and his trade war has now escalated to implementing a 50% tariff — putting critical Maine trade relationships at risk.
A tariff is a tax. It shows up in groceries, energy costs, and now in a new long list of goods that will just increase prices for Maine families. We’re already in an affordability crisis, and Trump’s trade wars and foreign wars are making it worse.
This isn’t collaboration. It isn’t helping our businesses. And now that essential Maine industries like lobster are on the list, the fisherman and other businesses that depend on Canadian trade are the ones paying the price — putting critical economic drivers directly in the crossfire.
This is another Trump attack from Washington, and it’s the same reckless approach we’ve already watched fail and threaten Maine’s economy. Our state and our people are the ones who will be hurt.
My opponent Bobby Charles has supported the Trump agenda every step of the way, now suddenly he’s claiming to be against it. Maine deserves a governor who’s consistent, not politically convenient.”
