Letter: Meet Hannah Pingree: our future governor

This guest column, written by the Chlöe Sheahan ’26, was originally published in the Bowdoin Orient.

The majority of Bowdoin’s student body, 89.9 percent, is not from Maine. I understand why you may pay more attention to politics in your home state or country. However, Maine is your home too, and Hannah Pingree, Democratic candidate for Maine governor, will make our state a Maine that we can and want to live in.

On Monday, March 2nd at 8 p.m., Pingree is visiting the Roux Lantern to speak with our community.

Pingree has a strong record from her career in public service, from serving as Speaker of the Maine House, the youngest woman to do so in the country, to leading the Governor’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future. She led efforts that secured $300 million for affordable housing development across Maine, and she’s already released a housing plan during her campaign. Pingree also launched the Community Resilience Partnership, helping over 260 towns adapt to climate change.

As a Mainer who has seen our housing crisis firsthand while volunteering with Preble Street, who has seen sea levels rise and powerful storms damage our working waterfront and who has seen the effects of poorly designed policies, Pingree has my vote.
