Senate Majority Leader Teresa Pierce and Assistant Majority Leader Jill Duson back Hannah for Governor with primary less than two weeks away
PORTLAND, Maine — More than 50 Maine women gathered to back Hannah Pingree for Governor, as two top Democrats in the Maine Senate announced their endorsement of her candidacy in a show of force ahead of the June primary.
Hannah, a former Speaker of the Maine House, said her candidacy is personal. “I’m running because I deeply care about Maine and the people who live here. But I’m also running because I’m a mom and because I’m a woman. All across Maine, I hear from women who are fired up — they want sanity, they want safety, they’re worried about their kids. And they are mad that we are back to fighting for our rights. I am too.”
Senate Majority Leader Teresa Pierce, breaking from her long standing practice of staying out of primaries, said “I have served in the Maine Senate and House and on the Town Council. I have watched a lot of races. I have stayed out of primaries — that is not something I do lightly, and it is not something I do often. This is the first time I have stood up at a moment like this one and said: this is my candidate. This is the person. That person is Hannah Pingree.”
Assistant Majority Leader Jill Duson framed the endorsement around the future of women’s rights in Maine. “When I think about what I want for women in Maine and across the country, I want them to live somewhere that trusts them. That sees them. That says: your life, your body, your future belongs to you. Hannah Pingree will make Maine that place.”
The Women for Hannah event comes as Hannah campaigns on her comprehensive Maine’s Next Chapter plans focused on affordability and economic opportunity — addressing the rising cost of housing, health care, child care, property taxes, energy, and groceries, while laying out a strategy to grow wages and expand opportunity across Maine’s rural, coastal, and urban communities.
Hannah has been leading her Maine’s Next Chapter Tour, traveling to communities statewide for town halls, house parties, and listening sessions where Mainers can connect directly with her and share their vision for the state’s future. Her campaign continues to build momentum with endorsements from Governor Janet Mills, Speaker of the Maine House Ryan Fecteau, Attorney General Aaron Frey, Mayor Jeff Harmon (Auburn), Mayor Eric Sanders (Belfast) Mayor Elyse Tipton (South Portland) more than 120 current and former state legislators, Maine High School Democrats, Rachel’s Action Network, the Sierra Club, Vote Mama, Maine Youth Power and Maine Conservation Voters Action Fund. She also has been named a “Gun Sense Candidate” by Mom’s Demand Action and a “Champion” by the Maine Gun Safety Coalition. She has also earned a place on US Senate candidate Graham Platner’s ballot.
Those endorsements — alongside strong debate performances, packed community events, Town Halls, house parties, and listening sessions statewide — have fueled record volunteer engagement and growing momentum in every corner of the state in advance of the June 9th primary.
